The town traces its roots to the gold rush era — gold was discovered on the hill across the river in 1860, and Thomas and Rosa Chavner platted the townsite in 1884 after selling the railroad right-of-way through their land. Incorporated in 1895, Gold Hill grew into a hub for quartz mining and agricultural shipping, and later hosted the Beaver Portland Cement Company, the largest single industrial enterprise in Southern Oregon at the time of its 1914 opening. The Oregon Vortex and House of Mystery, on Sardine Creek just outside town, is the earliest documented mystery spot or gravitational hill in the United States, open to tourists since 1930. The attraction, where balls appear to roll uphill, heights seem to shift, and plumb lines behave strangely, has drawn curious visitors for nearly a century and is widely recognized as the inspiration for the Mystery Shack in the animated series Gravity Falls.
